Class Description
This course presents an introduction to the scanning process for students with
disabilities. The history of scanning, technological improvements, and the actual
process of how scanning works will be discussed. Students will also learn the
benefits and drawbacks of scanning and different types of software. Scanning
for optical character recognition (OCR) and graphics will be examined. By the
end of the course the student will be knowledgeable about the background and how
to use a scanner to benefit other coursework.
This class is intended for beginners. It will have two areas on emphasis, one
on graphics and one on OCR. Students who choose to do their emphasis in graphics
will be able to incorporate graphics into presentations and other coursework.
Students will also have the option of having OCR as their primary focus. These
students will be able to integrate OCR text into publications and use other Assistive
Technology to allow them to access the OCR text such as a program that will read
the scanned text to them.
Each student will come out of the class with a project that they have used the
scanner on. They will also have valuable knowledge of purchasing a scanner and
what to look for at the store. Students will also have the opportunity to work
on a group project with their peers.
