How to Get the Most Out of Tutoring:
General Advice
Keep Your Appointments:
Most students meet with their tutor once a week for a fifty-minute session.
Your tutor will do his or her best to accommodate changes in your schedule. In
return, if you are going to be more than 5 minutes late or can't make it at all,
please let your tutor know as far in advance as possible.
Know Your Rights
You have a right to expect your tutor to arrive on time, to keep all scheduled
appointments, and to give you his/her full attention for the time scheduled. You
have a right to change tutors. If problems arise, speak to the Tutorial
Services Supervisor. You have a right to confidentiality.
Come Prepared
Do all your homework you have been assigned. Bring all relevant assignments,
papers, or books to your tutoring sessions. Come to your session with a clear
sense of what you want to work on during that session.
Actively Participate in Your Tutoring Session
Be prepared to work—to take notes, to construct an outline, to revise a
paragraph or work through a problem during the session. You will learn more from
doing than from just listening. Talk! Keep up your end of the dialogue. This is
your time to talk about your work. Tutors will not do your thinking or your
learning for you.
Remember that Improvement Takes Time
Learning a subject improves with time and practice. Each exercise that you do,
each conversation with your tutor will carry over into improvement on all your
future assignments. Be patient with yourself and watch for the unexpected
breakthroughs!
Cooperate with Your Tutor
Tutors know about many approaches to learning and many campus resources that can
enhance learning. If you are open to their suggestions and are willing to try
new techniques, you will be surprised at what you can accomplish. However, the
tutor is not a miracle worker. In the final analysis, it is your effort and
willingness to work that will contribute the most to your success.
