How to Refer a Student to DSPS
If a student has a disability and requests accommodations or services, refer the student to
DSPS.
It is likely that there are students in your classroom
who you suspect may need special accommodations.
If you decide to approach the student to discuss a possible need for services, please be sensitive
that the student may either be reluctant to discuss his/her disability, or may have
difficulty explaining it to you.
If you are unsure of how to approach a student you suspect might have a disability,
someone in DSPS would be happy to discuss this with you. Call the DSPS Office at
546-3148
and ask to speak to a disability specialist.
It would be helpful to announce in class at the beginning of each
semester and to put a Reasonable Accommodation statement in your syllabus.
For example:
"If you have a verified physical, mental, or learning
disability which requires any special accommodations, I am willing to make
any necessary arrangements with you. Please see me at your earliest
convenience."
LD Referral form
If you think a student might have a learning disability, please fill out
the LD Referral form, provide it to the student, and encourage the student
to make an appointment with DSPS.
