Guidelines for Students and Staff with Disabilities for a Safe Evacuation From the Cuesta College Campus

Cuesta College California Police Patch with slogan Eureka. In a campus emergency that will require the evacuation of the San Luis Obispo Campus, North County Campus, or the South County Sites, the following information is provided to assist and help our disabled persons community safely take protective action in times of an emergency.

Emergency Building or Campus Evacuation

  1. When a fire alarm or other signal is given to evacuate a building or the campus, follow the instructions of college staff or faculty members.
  2. You should prepare and have a plan ahead of time. Advise your faculty instructor or other staff member of any special assistance you will need to access designated evacuation areas.
  3. The designated evacuation area for people with disabilities who need transportation from the San Luis Obispo Campus, is in front of the Library, building #3100 / 3200. At the North County Campus the designated evacuation area is in front of the ADELAIDA building, #N3000. At our South County sites, the Student Services Program Coordinator will follow that school’s evacuation plan and will assist you to safely evacuate campus.
  4. Transportation from campus for those students who have transportation needs, will be coordinated with public transportation, Ride Share, CCAT or the campus motor pool.

Personal Emergency Plan

People should prepare and plan ahead for emergencies and have a Personal Safety Plan.

Helpful Guidelines are:

  1. Establish a buddy system with another classmate who can assist you.
  2. Advise your faculty instructor or other staff member of any special assistance you will need.
  3. Be familiar with the building alarms.
  4. Know where the building’s emergency doors and exits are located
  5. Do not use elevators unless you are authorized to do so by responding emergency personnel.
  6. In multi-floored buildings, wait in the lobby area or next to the elevators. Emergency personnel will be responding to these locations first to assist disabled persons who can not descend stairs, who are non-ambulatory or are confined to a wheel chair.
  7. Do not re-enter a campus building unless authorized by emergency personnel.
  8. TDD phones are located in front of the Cafeteria and the Library, building 3100/3200 on the San Luis Obispo campus and in the DSPS office, N3024 on the North County Campus.
