Katherine Ellison – Keynote Speaker

Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist

In 2007, both Katherine and her 12-year-old son, nicknamed Buzz, were diagnosed with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) making for such a tumultuous relationship that the two ultimately faced three choices: he'd go to boarding school; she'd go to boarding school; or they'd make it a full-time project to work out their problems together. Ms. Ellison will tell the story of their journey and what they have learned about themselves.

Katherine has written four books.

Buzz: A Year of Paying Attention; The Mommy Brain: How Motherhood Makes Us Smarter; The New Economy of Nature: The Quest to Make Conservation Profitable; Imelda: Steel Butterfly of the Philippines . Katherine Ellison has appeared on The Early Show on CBS , The Today Show , and in Self Magazine. Time magazine also featured an interview with Ms. Ellison.

Steven Kane, Ph.D.

Dr. Steve Kane is an Associate Professor in the Higher Education Counseling graduate program at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. A UCLA-trained and licensed psychologist, Dr. Kane is a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of learning disabilities and AD/HD in college students. F ormerly an Assistant Director and Learning Disabilities Specialist with the Cal Poly Disability Resource Center, Dr. Kane has served students with disabilities for over 20 years. Dr. Kane's remarks will address techniques for helping individuals with AD/HD succeed in school and at home .

Bill Spencer and Michele Gordon-Johnson of the Parent Connection of San Luis Obispo County will jointly present on resources available to help children, students, and parents work through problems at home and in the community.

Bill Spencer is a parent educator who has worked as a teacher, counselor, and principal in the public schools for over 30 years. He is a Certified Positive Discipline Associate Trainner providing workships for both teachers and parents.

Michele Gordon is an Early Childhood Education and Human Development instructor at Cuesta College. Both Bill and Michele are associated with Parent Connection of San Luis Obispo County.
