Adaptive Equipment

Equipment Loan/Use

DSPS arranges for the loan and/or use of special equipment to students with disabilities who require adapted equipment. Adaptive Equipment use must be authorized by a DSPS Specialist.

The same standards for borrowing/using college materials apply when using DSPS adapted equipment.

  • Phonic Ear
  • 4-track tape players
  • CD textbook players
  • spellchecker
  • electronic stethoscope
  • talking, 4-function, scientific, and graphing calculators
  • Perkins Brailler
  • raised line drawing tool.

Procedure

  1. A DSPS Specialist or Counselor verifies the disability, determines the need for special equipment and authorizes the use of adapted equipment.
  2. The student requests an Adaptive Equipment Authorization form from DSPS Support Service office.
  3. The student makes an appointment with DSPS Support Services to arrange for loan/use of equipment.
  4. The DSPS staff trains student in proper use of adaptive equipment.
  5. To borrow equipment, the student:
    1. takes completed Adaptive Equipment Authorization form to the Library Circulation desk; and
    2. returns equipment in good condition to the Library Circulation desk on the due date.

NOTE: Under authority of section 72237 of the Education Code, Cuesta College may withhold grades, transcripts, diplomas, and registration privileges from any student who fails to return adaptive equipment to the library when due. Students shall have their records released when they:

    1. Return adaptive equipment in good condition; and
    2. Pay any charges or fines.

Any violation of the above procedure may result in the suspension of this service.

Equipment Loan Form

The Equipment Loan Form may be picked up at the Support Services Desk at the SLO or NCC DSPS Offices. Completed forms should be returned to the Support Services Desk.
